There’s one in every family: the guy or gal who says they don’t want anything for their birthday or Christmas. But, if you don’t buy them anything, they pout. What’s a person to do about them?
Well, there are a few cool ideas you can use to get them something without risking a gift return.
The Gift Card
Ah yes. The gift card. Never was there a more universal gift for that hard-to-shop-for person than the gift card. It’s like money, but not.
Many people resist gift cards because they feel generic. And, they can feel that way unless you personalize them. How do you do that? Well, instead of making it look like you went down to the local store and just threw some money on the card, you could create an “inspired” gift card.
Find out what they want, in general. Let’s say they’re a hunting or outdoor enthusiast. A sporting goods store gift card would be perfect. But, you don’t know what they need and what they don’t need.
What you could do is take a camera with you to a local sporting goods store and “document” the experience of you trying to figure out what to buy. Try on a few things. Get pictures of you checking out price tags.
You could even make a written journal of your “adventure.” Arrange everything in a nice notebook. At the end, tape the gift card and wish them a happy birthday or merry Christmas.
Everyone loves an experience. Things like hot air balloon rides, cooking classes, “staycations,” white water rafting, or even a package from the mysterious package company. Experiences have a funny way of creating stories, and stories become memories, and those memories become things that are irreplaceable.
A Prepaid Service
A prepaid service is another good idea. Let’s say that your friend or relative has never seen Netflix. Unreal, right? Well, let’s assume that, somehow, they’ve escaped the wondrous world of Netflix binging, and you want to introduce them to that world and ruin their social life.
What you could do is pay for a year’s worth of Netflix for them.
Another great prepaid service idea is a year’s worth of car washes or detailing, or maybe babysitting. Think of something your friend or relative really wants, but would never think of buying for him or herself. Buy that thing.
A Personalized Gift
The great thing about personalized gifts is that it doesn’t have to be anything special and these are usually unexpected gifts. That’s because the actual gift isn’t the gift you’re giving them. It’s the fact that it’s personalized. So, a set of personalized pens is obviously more valuable than a package of Bics. Why?
It’s not the pens that matter. It’s the fact that you had the pens engraved that make the gift so cool.
And, you don’t have to rush out and buy something to engrave or personalize. You can take something the person already owns and get that personalized. It will be like an improved version of that something.
